Intermuscular coherence analysis in older adults reveals that gait‐related arm swing drives lower limb muscles via subcortical and cortical pathways

چکیده
Key points Gait-related arm swing in humans supports efficient lower limb muscle activation, indicating a neural coupling between the upper and limbs during gait. Intermuscular coherence analyses of gait-related electromyography from 20 healthy participants identified significant alpha beta/gamma bands that share common subcortical cortical drivers coordinate rhythmic four-limb gait pattern. Additional directed connectivity revealed muscles drive shape activity via pathways to lesser extent vice versa. The results provide underpinning may serve as an effective rehabilitation therapy concerning impaired neurological diseases. Effect of Foot Orthoses on the Timing of Lower Limb Muscles Activity during Walking in Older Adults
Introduction: As a person gets older, their gait patterns change and their ability to walk decreases. Orthoses are used to relieve musculoskeletal disorders, skeletal problems, disabilities, etc. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of orthoses on timing of lower limb muscles in the older adults during gait. Methods: The present study was a clinical trial. 14 females ...
متن کاملHigh-Frequency Intermuscular Coherence between Arm Muscles during Robot-Mediated Motor Adaptation
Adaptation of arm reaching in a novel force field involves co-contraction of upper limb muscles, but it is not known how the co-ordination of multiple muscle activation is orchestrated. We have used intermuscular coherence (IMC) to test whether a coherent intermuscular coupling between muscle pairs is responsible for novel patterns of activation during adaptation of reaching in a force field. S...
متن کاملBrain injury rehabilitation: cortical and subcortical interfacing via retinal pathways.
Most patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI) have visual and nonvisual retinal signal processing problems with concomitant dysfunctional sensory systems integration. These dysfunctions often include problems of spatial orientation, motor planning, and motor control. They are generally not visible on diffusion tensor imaging, diffusion spectrum magnetic resonance imaging, or functional magnet...
متن کاملIntermuscular Coherence in Normal Adults: Variability and Changes with Age
We investigated beta-band intermuscular coherence (IMC) in 92 healthy adults stratified by decade of age, and analysed variability between and within subjects. In the dominant upper limb, IMC was estimated between extensor digitorum communis and first dorsal interosseous as well as between flexor digitorum superficialis and first dorsal interosseous. In the ipsilateral lower limb, IMC was measu...
متن کاملThe Effect of Cognitive Training on Lower Limb Muscular Activity in Older Adults With Balance Impairment During Walking
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of two different approaches of dual-task training and executive training on lower limb muscular activity in older adults with balance impairment. Methods: This was a quasi-experimental study performed with the pre-test and post-test method. Thirty older adults (age= 73.8±4.6, height= 1.65±0.06, weight= 69.17±12.67) were randomly ass...
